The word 'Huna' is currently used to refer to the ancient wisdom of the people indigenous to the islands now known as Hawai'i. That name was selected by Max Freedom Long, a man who researched and recorded this knowledge for many years, and was responsible for bringing it to modern awareness.
He said that while the ancient word 'kahuna', meaning 'keeper of the secret' was still in use, "… the word for their secret lore was never found. The code of secrecy had been so strong and so well kept that it may never have been given a name … the name we used, for this reason, was 'Huna', which means 'secret'.' ~ Max Freedom Long, Recovering the Ancient Magic and The Secret Science at Work.
A legend of Hawai'i says there would be a time when the knowledge would need to be hidden, but that there would come a time when that ancient wisdom would need to be shared with people everywhere, to support a viable future.
Under pressure from then ruling missionary interests, the practice of Huna ~ which might be seen as the philosophic and spiritual base of the Hawai'ian way of life ~ was outlawed in 1820.
Perhaps predictably, as in Australia and other places, the knowledge simply went underground. The Native American Religious Freedoms Act of 1979, and repeal of most of the laws restricting the practice of Huna in 1989, has made Huna more accessible again.
Now, some of those who have preserved the knowledge are sharing it, with native Hawai'ians and others who are ready to receive it, in fulfilment of that ancient promise, and permission has been given for some who were not born Hawai'ian to pass that knowledge on.
Increasingly, people of our modern world are seeking the ancient wisdom of Indigenous cultures. Hawai'ian Huna is perhaps more accessible than most such knowledge.
An ancient prayer of the Kahuna says 'Let that which is unknown become known'.
'Because the Kapu is gone, therefore you must find the responsibility of the knowledge, the responsibility was to educate and enlighten people, through the knowledge that was given. It is important for all who acquire the knowledge to have that understanding,'John Kaimikaua, Kumuhula, in Hawai'i, 1993.
Huna is not alone in pointing out that 'energy flows where the attention goes', but it has some uniquely effective models and techniques for focusing attention so that vitality and well-being result.
It is a Shamanic tradition, which means that its practice supports each person in recognising themselves as indivisibly part of the universe, experiencing interconnection with all else that is, without the need of an intermediary.
Huna has been preserved in chant and sacred dance, and in other ways, for thousands, upon thousands, of years. The study of Huna, today, reveals not just ancient secrets of knowledge and technique, but supports realignment with the environment of which we are part.
It is a way of empowering ourselves through discovering how we already do author the natural process of being in life.
Thus, the knowledge referred to by the name of Huna may indeed be thought of as pointing the way to the secret that we are.
